Make sure your construction is legally being built with the appropriate building permits and supporting documents

What is building permit? A building permit is a official approval from your city's government to legally construct a new building, expand or renovate an existing building. Make sure your construction is legally being built with the appropriate building permits and supporting documents. This is to ensure the construction follows all building codes, zoning codes and ordinances, and environmental protection. There can be other permits and approvals your project my need like water/sewer permit, historic/SAP approval, tree permits, MEP permits (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing), and more.

Permits are issued from the local government like your city or county agencies. For example, if your project is in Fulton County, you can go to City of Atlanta city hall, City of East Point, City of College Park, etc. to receive a permit. It just depends on the address. Or if your project is in City of Decatur, your permit can be issued with Dekalb County or with the City of Decatur. It depends on your address.

To build anything, you will need a permit. Most cities/counties requires a building permit before any construction.

When is a permit needed? To build anything, you will need a permit. Most cities/counties requires a building permit before any construction. Any new construction, additions (2nd story, rear additions, deck additions, attic buildouts, basement buildouts, etc), structural renovations (removing load bearing walls, adding LVL's, repairing joists, etc) will require a permit. Some cities have an exemption on what doesn't need a permit. For example, at the City of Atlanta, repair work no longer requires a permit. Repairs including interior painting, new flooring, new fixtures, new appliances, less than 3 sheets of drywall repair, etc. When a permit is required so are building plans, a site/survey plan, and other documents.

It can be challenging trying to get a permit and having to deal with contractors, city employees, inspectors, etc., especially if you don't know what is needed. Hiring a permit expeditor can take that off of your plate. We will take care of everything from the research to the certificate of occupancy. Book us now for a consultation.
